Side Effects in Liposuction

The inappropriate post-surgical clean-up processes followed by the clinic are one of the major causes for the side effects. However, unlike in other procedures, these complications are impermanent and non-lethal, making it less frightening.
One of the common consequences of liposuction are the generation of conditions called hematomas and seromas that form as a result of the discoloration of the skin. The blood that seeps out during the procedure may get accumulated under the skin resulting in darker spots. Absence of proper drainage of the treated area during the time of the surgery can increase the presence of hematomas and seromas. While in typical cases it vanishes within a few months of surgery, it is known to have lasted for several years in severe cases of blood accumulation.
Skin irregularities are probably one of the worse non-serious side effects because of its lasting effect on the patient. This happens when too many fat cells are removed from one area leaving the skin to appear lumpy and uneven. It can be avoided by removing small amounts over several sessions.
When the area is not properly drained the fluids that build up can cause swelling in lower parts of the body due to the simple principles of gravity. This is only a potential problem when major areas such as the abdomen have been treated. The fluid flows down and causes the feet and ankles to swell. It can be a scary experience for most patients but this side effect is fortunately only temporary.
Other developments witnessed after liposuction come from the usage of anesthesia and other specific chemicals found in the solution. For example, epinephrine is known to have caused the elevation of heart rates during the surgery and for a few hours after, until the impact of the medication wears off. Generally, the doctors request the patients to abstain from caffeine or drugs that have epinephrine-like chemicals like cold medications a few days before the actual date of the procedure.
Many of the side effects of liposuction can be reduced by proper drainage of the treated area before it is closed up. Laser liposuction is a method of liposuction that uses smaller tools to treat smaller areas which in turn greatly reduces or even eliminates some of the common side effects of traditional liposuction.
